Not every journey needs an itinerary.

Some of the best ones start with a road that looks more interesting than the one you planned to take. Like a gate left open. Or a track that seems to lead somewhere. You pull in, you stop, and nothing is waiting for you anywhere.

There's a kind of freedom in that moment that's hard to explain if you haven't felt it. It’s not a loud, obvious kind. It’s a much quieter freedom where you realise you've stopped checking the time, where the plan you made two weeks ago (the one with the highlighted route and the booked restaurants) starts to feel like it belongs to a completely different trip.

Ireland does something to people who slow down in it. The light moves differently here, or seems to. The landscape keeps shifting even when you haven't gone far… a twenty-minute stretch of coast road can feel completely unlike the one before it. It's not a land that gives itself up to people in a hurry. But if you're not in one, we find it to be generous.

Most people who come here see the obvious things. Which is fine. The obvious things are worth seeing. But there's another Ireland underneath that one. It’s quieter, less photographed, and not particularly hard to find. You just have to be moving at the right speed. Enough time to take the turn that looked interesting, to stop without a reason, to stay somewhere longer than you planned.
